Stress Management

When life gets so busy and you pile the pressure on yourself to do more and more each day you get stressed. If you’re constantly on the go and never allow yourself some valuable time out to recharge your batteries you’ll succumb to illness after illness because you’re not letting your body have a break. When you’re stressed you’re in “fight or flight” mode and it’s only adrenaline that keeps you going. When that runs out you hit the wall. Learning stress management will prevent all this from happening.

I know from personal experience how debilitating not having stress management skills can be. In my previous life in the corporate world I was always taking on more work to prove my capabilities and didn’t realise that I was already doing a great job without going the extra mile. I ended up having a breakdown. The slightest problem would have me in tears whereas before I had no issues. So I ended up with two months off work to regroup and reassess what I really wanted from life and how I was going to achieve it.

The main things I learned during that time on how to manage my stress were balance, acceptance and faith.

Balance in what you do each day means having a break or quiet time for yourself. It’s about having a laugh or doing something light hearted and also something meaningful. This could be completing a task at work or in the home.

Acceptance is about accepting that you can’t be all things to everyone and you only have so much capacity in any one day to do things. Allowing yourself the opportunity to stand back and realistically look at what you are taking on is important. Then prioritising how you go about things allows you to feel calmer. When you do this you are in a better space to let go of guilt and the ‘shoulds’ we talk ourselves into.

Faith is all about trusting that whatever decision you make it will be OK. To act with integrity and know that you are doing the best you can. Any unsupportive responses to your actions are the other persons issue not yours. Have faith that whatever the outcome, there will be benefits.

Being able to manage your stress levels will allow you to get the most out of each day. You’ll have more energy and vitality, with greater optimism and zest for life.
